It's possible, but rare to exhibit your skills or showcase your talent or just recieve recognition. It also creates a repute among top business owners thus increasing your network.

Earning majorly depends on the numbers of jobs taken, but without expenses such as benefits, taxes and various costs associated with a physical office space employers can afford to pay higher. In other words you can earn more working from home and earn more on the same projects that you would work on from the office.
Another tactic that some freelancers apply is to keep a steady job full time or part time and work on freelance projects in their free time to earn extra.

Freelancing is an excellent choice for professionals but you don't really have to be a pro to start freelancing. Freelancing projects range from iOS development to data entry thus the level of skill highly varies.
